Remote Online Notary V.S. Mobile Notary: What’s the Difference?

Notarized documents are often the last step between an individual and an important milestone, such as a mortgage for a first home, acquiring a travel consent form for a child, or establishing a will and trust. This is why understanding service options is so important – when the time comes, most people want their documents notarized quickly so they can move forward with whatever legal or business matter they are dealing with. For those individuals, remote online notary services or mobile notary services may sound like enticing and convenient options. In this article, we will explain both notarization processes and outline the key differences between them.

Mobile Notary Services

Mobile notary services require a licensed Notary Public to travel to clientele and perform the notarization in person. Traveling Notary Publics have specialized credentials and have been appointed by the California Secretary of State to administer oaths, verify signatures, and determine the understanding and willingness of the person signing the documents. Notarization with a mobile notary can happen anywhere the client needs to meet, for example at home, in a hospital, nursing home, library, or prison.

Remote Online Notary Services

Online notarizations require the signer to appear before a remote Notary via a secure audio-video chat platform. Using knowledge-based authentication (KBA) and credential analysis to verify the identity of the signer, the Notary will then complete the process with an electronic Notary seal and a digital certificate.

Both mobile and online notary services are intended to ensure the authenticity of the document being notarized. They are fraud-deterrent processes that may be required for a wide variety of situations. Here are the key differences between the two services:

Location

Mobile notary services are located wherever the client prefers to meet. A mobile notary travels to meet their clients in convenient locations. Remote online notary services are performed completely online. The signer must have access to a secure computer with good internet and the ability to run audio-video chat software.

Price Range

Some mobile notaries charge additional travel fees, but opting for a local mobile notary will reduce those costs considerably. Remote online notarization is sometimes more expensive but comparable in price to mobile services. The most cost effective option will always be making an appointment at an in-person notary location.

Security

As long as a remote or mobile Notary is bonded, has passed the state-administered exam, has received a certificate from the state, and has fulfilled all other qualifications required of a Notary in your state, you can be assured of the security of working with them. While some are naturally skeptical of online notary services due to the remote aspect of it, they can be assured that more than thirty states have already passed remote notarization laws to date.
